Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine Monastery located high in the mountains outside of Barcelona. We rode the Montserrat Rack Railway up to the monastery. We visited the art gallery and wanted to hear the choir but missed it.

When you get to the Monastery and look behind you, you see the railway for the funicular train that carries you from the monastery to the next level of the mountain. The little building at the top of the railway is the funicular station.
This is the view of the monastery from the funicular station looking down. You can hike several miles further to the left to get to another section of the monastery, but we decided we had gone high enough. It was cold and we were tired.
When I saw this fenced building with the staircase and apartments missing, I immediately saw a visual of what life looks like for so many people. From their perspective, they can never climb up to their dream of a better life, because the way to the top has been destroyed and barricaded.
