Rising Above the Clouds

Each time I have been to Seattle the weather has prevented me from photographing Mt. Rainier. Once when I was flying back to the East Coast I looked out of my window just in time to see Mt Rainier pushing its way up through the clouds. Glad to be in a window seat and have a clean window for a change, I grabbed my wife’s camera and made this image. Sometimes the best pictures come after we think all hope is gone.

A Quiet Place

This swing beside a dirt path in the woods reminds me that we often need a quiet place where we can think, play, relax, and just be by ourselves for awhile.

It reminds me of a Ralph Carmichael song that I learned to love years ago . . .

There is a quiet place
far from the rapid pace
where God can soothe my troubled mind.

Sheltered by tree and flower
there in my quiet hour with him
my cares are left behind.

Whether a garden small,
or on a mountain tall
new strength and courage there I find,
and then from that quiet place
I go prepared to face a new day
with love for all mankind

The Old Red Country Church

For many years I passed St. Andrews Episcopal Church several times a week traveling between Selma and Thomasville, AL. The Carpenter Gothic architecture always caught my eye. I photographed it many years ago in the film days, but stopped and photographed again. It was built in 1853-1854 and is located in Gallion, Alabama near the Post Office.

Below are other views of the church.

We do not see rows of motorbikes lining the streets like this very often in the United States, but can be seen every day in many parts of Europe. These are near the Diagonal Mall in Barcelona.

This row of motor bikes with a small four-wheeler was parked a block or so from the Duomo di Milano in Milan, but can be seen virtually anywhere.

Our guide lights a candle on the third evening of Hanakkuh at a restaurant in Tel Aviv.

Everywhere I went during Hanakkuh, donuts were being served. These regular donuts with chocolate icing were at a pastry shop in Jerusalem. There were also jelly-filled donuts called suganiyot. I took a picture of these donuts because they were so-o-o large. They were also some of the best I have tasted.

This was the Christmas Centerpiece in lobby of Kaya Izmir Thermal Hotel. This hotel is a wonderful place to stay during a trip to Izmir. It is very near shopping and other conveniences. But the thing I liked most were the wonderful meals they served.

Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine Monastery located high in the mountains outside of Barcelona. We rode the Montserrat Rack Railway up to the monastery. We visited the art gallery and wanted to hear the choir but missed it.

When you get to the Monastery and look behind you, you see the railway for the funicular train that carries you from the monastery to the next level of the mountain. The little building at the top of the railway is the funicular station.

This is the view of the monastery from the funicular station looking down. You can hike several miles further to the left to get to another section of the monastery, but we decided we had gone high enough. It was cold and we were tired.
